Change in social institutions

Uses and Trends

The way how we use Social Media has changed significantly. Uber has taken over the driving services industry. The old traditional method of waiting and waving down a taxi are slowing disappearing. Even in education, schools are more involved with social media. Projects and assessments are implementing various social media platforms. However, it doesn’t end just there. In the article by Fleming, we see how parents are being involved as well. School’s are using Facebook pages and Tweets to communicate with student’s parents, giving them updates on upcoming events and news.

Disruptive Impact

It is no secret that cyberbullying is a problem that affects a school’s environment. Although social media makes it easy for people to contact loved ones. It also makes it easy for cyberbullies to harass their target. An article called “A Majority of Teens Have Experienced Some Form of Cyberbullying” shows us the statistics on how teens are being harassed. However, schools say they are implementing policies that are punishing kids who are participating in cyberbullying, even if it occurs off school grounds.

Social Media is also causing a disruptive impact in governments. Election campaigns are being built with the help of social media. In the past, in order to build a campaign, arrangements were done in person or over the phone. Now everything is announced over social media because it gets the message across at a faster rate.

Predictions

The future will cause services that don’t use social media such as taxi to close their doors. Without adapting to the social media changing society using the traditional methods for anything will not work. Even school will further use social media to interact with parents and students. This might change how classes are conducted, maybe in highschool’s live streams will be used to teach.
